Public lecture: Bodies as Data

woensdag 12 april 2023, 19:30 - 21:30 uur

The C4/C6 lectures consist of different (international) speakers, themes and cases each year, in which the relationships and interaction between theory, society and design are revealed. This semester, you are warmly invited to join the lectures through a livestream.

Bodies as Data
by Simone C Niquille.

Unlocking the phone with the touch of your finger, getting checked at an automated passport control, applying a face filter on social media, the body is in constant confrontation with a digital twin. This talk will travel through the dreams, aspirations and consequences of translating bodies and identities into data. The presentation will cycle through objects and instances that at first appear arbitrarily connected but unravel into a land of measurement, control and fantasy: the interface of ergonomic software, a gas mask designed for the US Army, Star Trek Enterprise, identification tactics of the French Police in 1880,…asking questions on representation, standardisation and assumptions around the human body.
